US Charges 293 People in Arizona Immigration Enforcement Drive

Federal prosecutors in Arizona brought immigration-related criminal charges against 293 people during a week-long enforcement operation, including hundreds of cases involving illegal entry and re-entry into the United States.

The US Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona said it filed 149 cases involving people accused of illegally re-entering the country and charged 132 others with illegally entering the United States between August 22 and August 28.

Prosecutors also filed 11 cases against 12 people accused of smuggling migrants into or within Arizona, highlighting the authorities’ parallel focus on immigration-related trafficking and transportation networks.

The cases were referred or supported by several federal agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement, US Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the FBI, the US Marshals Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The enforcement figures cover criminal cases brought by federal prosecutors and do not represent the total number of immigration enforcement actions or removals carried out during the period.

Among the cases highlighted by prosecutors was that of Jesus Antonio Madrigal, who was charged on August 24 with transporting an illegal migrant.

According to the criminal complaint, Border Patrol agents observed a Honda Accord travelling south on Federal Route 19 near Sells, Arizona, before later seeing the vehicle travelling north. Agents attempted to stop the car for an immigration inspection, but the driver allegedly failed to yield and reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

Agents deployed spike strips at an immigration checkpoint on State Route 86, immobilising the vehicle. Prosecutors said the rear-seat passenger was a Mexican citizen who was unlawfully present in the United States.

In another case, Jabari Kaleem Mims was charged on August 24 with transporting an illegal migrant for profit.

Border Patrol camera operators allegedly observed a person entering a BMW near Border Road on August 22. Agents attempted to stop the vehicle after the driver, identified as Mims, allegedly ran a stop sign and accelerated away.

Prosecutors said one passenger later exited the vehicle and fled into nearby brush before being apprehended. The person was identified as a Mexican citizen allegedly present unlawfully in the United States. Mims was subsequently taken into custody after he stopped the vehicle.

The cases come as federal authorities continue to use criminal prosecutions alongside immigration enforcement operations along the US-Mexico border. Arizona contains one of the busiest sections of the southern US border and remains a major focus of federal efforts targeting unauthorised migration and migrant-smuggling networks.
