The United States conducted what it described as “self-defense strikes” on Iranian radar and drone control sites over the weekend, escalating a sequence of military exchanges between Washington and Tehran after the downing of a US surveillance drone.

US Central Command said US fighter aircraft targeted air defence systems, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones in Iran, following what it said was the loss of an MQ-1 drone operating over international waters.

The strikes were carried out at locations identified as Goruk and Qeshm Island. CENTCOM said the operation was a response to what it called “aggressive” actions by Iranian forces.

The US military also said the destroyed assets formed part of Iran’s air defence and drone control network linked to the incident.

The latest exchange adds to a broader series of tit-for-tat strikes between the two countries in recent days.
