US Carries Out Airstrikes Against al-Shabaab Near Kismayo

The United States carried out airstrikes against al-Shabaab in southern Somalia in coordination with the Somali government, the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) said.

The strikes took place on September 24 near Qumbi, about 90 kilometres north-northwest of Kismayo, according to AFRICOM.

The command said the operation was conducted alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali Armed Forces as part of efforts to weaken al-Shabaab’s capacity to threaten US forces and American citizens abroad.

AFRICOM did not disclose details about the military units or aircraft involved, citing operational security.

The command did not provide further information on casualties or the specific targets hit in the statement.
