The United States has expressed support for the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission’s reporting on recent killings in Arsi and its efforts to facilitate the release of prisoners earlier this year, following talks between US Ambassador Ervin Massinga and the commission’s chief commissioner, Berhanu Adello.

During the meeting, Massinga commended the commission’s peacebuilding efforts and highlighted US support for its work, according to a statement issued by the US Embassy in Addis Ababa.

The ambassador specifically cited the commission’s detailed and transparent reporting on recent killings in Arsi, as well as its role in facilitating prisoner releases earlier this year.

The discussions also covered the commission’s continued engagement with the Ethiopian Government, particularly in conflict-affected areas such as Tigray.

The US said it expected the commission to continue working on economic recovery, institution-building, the restoration of judicial systems, democracy and social reintegration in areas affected by conflict.

The meeting comes as the commission continues to document human rights concerns and engage with government institutions on accountability and peacebuilding.
