The United States Attorney for the District of Puerto Rico, W. Stephen Muldrow, has announced he will step down on July 7, 2026, ending a tenure marked by long service in the US Department of Justice.

Muldrow said his resignation follows more than 37 years in federal service, describing his time as US Attorney as “the honor of my professional life” in a statement released on Wednesday.

He praised staff at the US Attorney’s Office in Puerto Rico, calling them “the finest men and women in the Department,” and said he was proud of the office’s work in prosecuting cases and supporting justice administration.

The outgoing prosecutor also acknowledged federal, state and local law enforcement partners, highlighting their role in public safety operations. He said their daily work involved significant personal risk in efforts to protect communities.

Muldrow thanked both the Trump and Biden administrations for their roles in his appointment and continued service, noting he was nominated in 2019 and later confirmed by the Senate.

During his tenure, he said his work was guided by the principle that public institutions must uphold justice and operate with integrity, adding that the mission of his office centred on fair and impartial enforcement of the law and protection of the interests of the United States.

He concluded his statement with a reflection on public service as the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding, wishing well to the people of Puerto Rico and the United States.
