The United States and Portugal will launch a bilateral chief executives' forum next week to identify new trade and investment opportunities, as the two countries seek to strengthen economic ties amid growing attention to economic security and strategic cooperation.

The inaugural plenary meeting of the US-Portugal CEO Forum is scheduled for November 10, 2026, in Lisbon, according to a joint statement released following the 53rd meeting of the two countries' Standing Bilateral Commission.

The initiative will bring business leaders into the bilateral economic dialogue, with the two governments seeking to identify investment opportunities, facilitate job creation and support economic growth in both countries.

The announcement followed discussions between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel in Lisbon on October 8, as well as commitments made during the previous Standing Bilateral Commission meeting.

Beyond economic cooperation, the latest meeting reaffirmed the countries' defence and security partnership, including their commitment to NATO and increased allied defence investment in line with agreements reached at the alliance's 2025 summit in The Hague.

The two governments also highlighted cooperation between the Portuguese armed forces and the Illinois National Guard under the US State Partnership Program. The arrangement is intended to strengthen military interoperability, readiness and the exchange of expertise.

The Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal in the North Atlantic, featured prominently in the discussions. Both governments welcomed expanding US engagement with the islands and committed to pursuing economic opportunities and people-to-people ties that benefit local communities.

They also acknowledged US Air Force efforts to address environmental contamination in the region.

The meeting additionally addressed international cooperation, with Washington congratulating Portugal on its election to the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term. Both sides agreed to coordinate their positions on international issues during Portugal's membership.

The 53rd meeting of the Standing Bilateral Commission reflects the continued institutional engagement between the two NATO allies. The next meeting is scheduled to take place in Lisbon in 2027.
