Top US and Iranian leaders are expected to meet in Oman today.

Tensions remain high between the two countries over a possible military clash following the arrival of a top US warship in the Middle East.

It was unclear where the two leaders would meet or what issues they would discuss.

While the countries we have sanctioned are trying to defuse the tension, the widely divergent positions of Iran and the United States have heightened concerns.

If today's talks are successful, the countries are expected to agree on points on which they can negotiate.

The United States, which wants Iran to halt its nuclear program, has also demanded that the country eliminate its stockpile of enriched uranium.

The US wants Iran's ballistic missile program and support for regional militants to be part of the talks.

Iran has warned of retaliation if any force is taken. It could also attack US military bases in the Middle East and Israel.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will lead the delegation to the talks with the US.

US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner will lead the US delegation.

"Our troops are standing ready to strike," the Iranian foreign minister said.
