US Air Force Appoints New Chief for Middle East Operations Command

The US Air Force has appointed Lt. Gen. Daniel Lasica to lead US Air Forces Central (AFCENT), the command responsible for coordinating American air operations across the Middle East and surrounding areas. Lasica assumed command of AFCENT on August 4 during a ceremony at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, replacing Lt. Gen. Derek France, who is scheduled to retire after leading the command since April 2024.

The ceremony was presided over by Gen. Adrian Spain, commander of US Air Combat Command, who praised AFCENT’s role in maintaining US airpower capabilities since its formation as part of the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force in 1979. "Since 1979 when this command took the mantle of the rapid deployment joint task force, you have defined combat excellence. This command has stood as our nation’s sentry," Spain said.

Lt. Gen. Patrick Frank, deputy commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM), said France had played a significant role in supporting joint and coalition operations during his time leading AFCENT. France thanked Air Force personnel, commanders and military families across the command, describing his tenure as an opportunity to lead during a period of major global security challenges.

Lasica joins AFCENT after serving as director of operations at US European Command headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany. He said the command would continue focusing on maintaining operational readiness and strengthening its ability to respond to emerging security challenges. AFCENT oversees US Air Force operations within the CENTCOM area of responsibility, which covers the Middle East and parts of Central and South Asia. The command supports air operations, planning and coordination with US and partner forces in the region.
