On Friday, the United States accused Rwanda of breaching a U.S.-brokered peace agreement by supporting a lethal new rebel offensive in the mineral-rich eastern region of Congo, warning that the Trump administration would take measures against those deemed as "spoilers" of the agreement.

These statements were made by U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz, as reports indicated that over 400 civilians have lost their lives since the Rwanda-supported M23 rebels intensified their offensive in South Kivu province of eastern Congo.

Regional officials have also reported the presence of Rwandan Special Forces in the strategically significant city of Uvira. Waltz expressed to the U.N. Security Council that the U.S. is "deeply concerned and extremely disappointed" by the resurgence of violence perpetrated by M23.

He cautioned that "Rwanda is steering the region towards greater instability and conflict."

Waltz emphasized, "We will utilize the resources at our disposal to hold accountable those who undermine peace."

He urged Rwanda to acknowledge Congo's right to protect its territory and to invite allied forces from neighboring Burundi to collaborate with Congolese troops.

Additionally, he mentioned that the U.S. is in communication with all parties involved "to promote restraint and prevent further escalation."
