42 countries have expressed concern to the United Nations about the human rights situation in Ethiopia ahead of elections scheduled for this year, citing restrictions on fundamental rights.
In a joint statement issued by the countries, they said, "We are concerned about the human rights situation in Ethiopia, in particular the restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association."
In addition, "The recent intimidation and banning of civil society organizations, including the narrowing and closure of the civic space, is a matter of concern."
The countries also expressed concern over the intimidation of independent media outlets and journalists, calling for a transparent investigation into these incidents.
The signatory countries noted that the 2024 report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights “reported serious human rights violations and abuses committed by state and non-state actors,” and expressed concern.
