The United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is investing 49,389 US dollars to expand military justice infrastructure in Beni, North Kivu, where a shortage of office space has constrained the operations of the local military tribunal.

The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) launched construction of six additional offices for the Beni Military Garrison Tribunal on September 29 under its Quick Impact Projects programme.

The three-month project is intended to improve the tribunal’s working capacity and enable military judicial officials to manage cases and provide services to people seeking justice more effectively.

Catherine-Anne Moore, Chief of MONUSCO’s Justice Support Section, said the investment goes beyond the construction of additional workspace, arguing that better facilities would help military magistrates investigate cases, protect victims and address impunity.

“This is an act of justice,” Moore said during the launch ceremony, describing the project as a response to demands for faster, more accessible and effective justice.

The Beni Military Garrison Tribunal has faced a shortage of workspace for several years. Colonel Guy Nyembo, president of the tribunal, said the new offices would improve working conditions for magistrates and court clerks and provide better facilities for people seeking justice.

The project is also expected to generate temporary employment for workers from Beni and surrounding communities during the construction period.

MONUSCO said the initiative forms part of its efforts to strengthen public institutions while supporting local economic resilience.

Once completed, the six offices are expected to improve the tribunal’s capacity for case management and its ability to respond to the needs of the local population in North Kivu, a province that continues to face significant security challenges.

The construction launch took place shortly after the death of senior military justice officials in a plane crash in Kenge. A minute of silence was observed during the ceremony in their memory.
