A United Nations investigation has concluded that Israel's war in Gaza amounted to "genocide."

Navi Pillay, chairwoman of the UN's Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that the UN investigation had concluded that the war in Gaza constituted "genocide."

"We have identified President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant based on their statements and orders," Pillay told the news agency.

He added, "Since these three individuals are government representatives, the government is responsible under the law. Therefore, we say that the Israeli government committed the crime of genocide."

According to the report, the commission found "evidence" that, in addition to statements made by Israeli officials, led to the conclusion that they had genocidal intent, Al Jazeera reported.

"The commission concluded that the Israeli authorities and Israeli security forces had genocidal intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip," the report said.

However, the Israeli Foreign Ministry called the investigation's findings "false" on its website, and said the report's authors were "pro-Hamas."
