The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has condemned the "horrific death" of Red Cross staff member Henelgen Fantahun, who was kidnapped and beaten by an unknown group in the North Gondar Zone of the Amhara Region.
"Aid workers should not be targets of attacks," said Dr. Abubakar Campo, the interim head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Ethiopia, the office said.
The Ethiopian Red Cross Society announced in a statement issued on August 06, 2025, that Ato Honeleng Fantahun, a Red Cross employee, was "abducted by an unknown group on August 02, 2025, while he was engaged in humanitarian services in the Chenek area, 15 kilometers from Debarq town."
The organization added that the association's member died the next day, August 03, 2025, due to "beating and inhumane treatment" during the detention.
The association noted that Dr. Tefera Assefa and Ato Adela Dalaw Yigzaw, who were working with Ato Honeleng when he was kidnapped, survived the attack.
