United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that a continued uniformed UN presence in Lebanon remains necessary after the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) expires at the end of the year.

In a letter dated Monday to the 15 members of the UN Security Council, Guterres presented three alternative configurations to replace the current 7,500-strong UNIFIL mission.

The most extensive proposal would include 350 unarmed military observers supported by four infantry battalions of 750 troops each and a force reserve of 700.

A second option would deploy 285 unarmed observers alongside two infantry battalions of 750 troops each and a reserve force of 450.

The third and most limited proposal would reduce the observer component to 215 personnel, supported by two light infantry battalions of 450 troops and a 350-strong quick reaction force.

Across all scenarios, Guterres stressed that future operations would require enhanced technical and logistical capabilities, including air assets, engineering, de-mining support, and surveillance tools.
