UK Stands by Ukraine as Russia Warns of Consequences Over British Drones

Britain has rejected a warning from Russia over its military support for Ukraine, after reports that drones manufactured by British companies were used in strikes deep inside Russian territory.

A spokesperson for the UK Ministry of Defence said the government remained committed to supporting Kyiv and would continue to oppose Russian aggression against Ukraine and its allies.

“Russia should be in no doubt about the resolve of this government to stand against Russian aggression, in Ukraine and against the U.K. and our allies,” the spokesperson said, adding that Britain “stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine”.

The Russian Embassy in London issued its warning after reports emerged that British-made drones had been used in recent Ukrainian attacks on mainland Russia. The embassy accused the British government of deliberately escalating the conflict while publicly expressing support for peace.

“London’s actions will inevitably carry consequences for which it will have to answer,” the embassy said. It added that the greater Britain’s involvement in the conflict and its support for Kyiv, the higher the price it would pay.

The reports mark a new dimension in Britain’s military support for Ukraine. The Times, citing Ukrainian and British defence sources, reported that drones made by two British companies had been used in recent aerial attacks deep inside Russia for the first time since the full-scale war began in 2022.

British officials defended the supply of the drones.

Lilian Greenwood, parliamentary under-secretary of state for the Department for Work and Pensions, said Britain had supported Ukraine throughout Russia’s invasion and would continue to do so.

“We won't be bullied in this way,” Greenwood said on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham also said the drone deliveries were consistent with Britain’s longstanding policy towards the war.

“This is the U.K. doing what it has long said it would do, which is to support Ukraine 100% against this illegal war led by Vladimir Putin,” Burnham said.

“We are not fair-weather friends. We will be there in Ukraine's hour of need, and that won't change,” he added.

Britain has substantially increased its drone assistance to Ukraine this year. In April, the Ministry of Defence announced 120,000 drones for Kyiv in what it described as its largest-ever drone package for Ukraine.

The government committed another 150,000 drones and 350 air-defence missiles in June, with delivery planned by the end of 2026.

The Ministry of Defence has described drones as critical to Ukrainian counterattacks along the frontline and to defending against continued Russian attacks.
