The United Kingdom has announced that it will not recognise Somaliland’s self-declared independence, reaffirming its support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Last week, Israel became the first country to formally recognise Somaliland as an independent state, prompting condemnation from several nations and regional bodies, including the UK.

“The United Kingdom does not recognise the independence of Somaliland,” said Ambassador James Kariuki, the UK’s Chargé d’Affaires to the United Nations, addressing the Security Council on Tuesday. “Any change in Somaliland’s recognition status should be based on dialogue and mutual agreement between Mogadishu and Hargeisa, consistent with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.”

He added: “We deplore any action that threatens regional peace and security,” urging Somalia’s federal government and Somaliland authorities to resolve their differences and collaborate on issues of common concern.

Ambassador Kariuki also warned that extremist groups, including Al-Shabaab, exploit divisions within Somalia, underscoring the need for unity.
