The UK's Royal Air Force Typhoon jets, in conjunction with French aircraft, have carried out an attack on an underground weapons depot in Syria used by the Islamic State (IS) group, the country's Ministry of Defence has announced.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defense said that "careful" intelligence analysis had led authorities to conclude that the site was being used to store weapons and explosives.

The statement also mentioned that the attack took place in the mountains north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

The Ministry of Defense said: "Our aircraft used 'Paveway IV' guided bombs to hit several entrance tunnels leading to the site... Initial reports indicate that the target was successfully hit."

While a detailed assessment of the damage caused by the strike is underway, officials believe the "target was successfully hit." The Typhoon FGR4 aircraft that carried out the strikes were reportedly supported by a tanker aircraft.

ISIS controlled parts of Syria and Iraq until late 2019, when it was declared a jihadist state.
