UK Expands Military Support for Saudi Arabia as Houthi Attacks Intensify

The United Kingdom is expanding its military support for Saudi Arabia following renewed attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement and rising tensions across the region.

At the request of the Saudi government, Britain will deploy a Royal Air Force Voyager aircraft equipped for air-to-air refuelling to support Saudi defensive operations in support of Yemen’s internationally recognised government.

The deployment adds to the UK’s existing military role in Saudi Arabia’s air-defence efforts, which includes air-defence equipment and British personnel involved in protecting the kingdom from missile and drone attacks.

The British government said the Houthi attacks pose a threat to regional stability and that developments in the Gulf could have direct economic consequences for the UK.

Disruption to energy supplies and trade routes could contribute to higher prices and increase costs for British businesses, the government said.

Britain condemned the attacks on Saudi Arabia and said both Saudi Arabia and Yemen have the right to defend themselves.

The UK has maintained long-standing security relationships with Saudi Arabia and Yemen and regards regional stability as important to the protection of trade and energy supplies.

The British government also said it continues to support a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Yemen, alongside efforts to protect regional security.

The latest military assistance comes amid renewed violence involving the Houthis, whose attacks have contributed to wider security concerns around the Gulf and neighbouring maritime routes.
