The UK government has donated 28 trucks and humanitarian response equipment worth 5.4 million pounds to the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, in a move aimed at strengthening emergency response and relief operations across Ethiopia.

The donation, provided through the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), was officially handed over during a ceremony held in Addis Ababa on Thursday attended by senior Ethiopian government officials, diplomats and humanitarian agencies.

Speaking at the event, Ethiopian Red Cross Secretary-General Abera Lulessa said the support went beyond the transfer of vehicles and equipment, describing it as a sign of the long-standing cooperation between the UK government and the Ethiopian Red Cross in efforts to save lives, improve livelihoods and reduce suffering across the country.

He said the partnership had already delivered life-saving assistance to communities in the Amhara, Oromia, Tigray and Benishangul-Gumuz regions through ongoing humanitarian programmes.

President of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society Abera Tola said relations between Ethiopia and the UK had been built on mutual respect, humanitarian solidarity and cooperation during times of crisis.

“During humanitarian emergencies over recent decades, including droughts, conflicts and public health crises, the British people have stood alongside Ethiopians not only with words of sympathy, but through concrete action and partnership,” he said.

Darren Welch, the UK ambassador to Ethiopia and permanent representative to the African Union, said the donation reflected the strong partnership between the UK government and the Ethiopian Red Cross Society.

Ethiopia’s Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Daba said the support would help strengthen reliable humanitarian and health services for vulnerable communities.
