An ambulance driver with the Uganda Red Cross Society has died from injuries sustained in an attack while supporting the Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Ismael Mulindwa was deployed to Aru in Ituri Province when he was seriously injured in the attack on August 17 while carrying out humanitarian duties, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

Mulindwa received specialised medical treatment and initially showed signs of recovery, but died from his injuries on October 1.

The IFRC expressed condolences to Mulindwa’s family, friends and colleagues at the Uganda Red Cross Society, saying his death highlights the risks faced by humanitarian personnel working in dangerous environments.

The federation condemned attacks against Red Cross and Red Crescent staff and volunteers and called for humanitarian workers to be protected and respected while carrying out their duties.

Mulindwa was supporting the Ebola response in eastern DRC, where humanitarian organisations operate in an environment affected by insecurity and armed violence.
