A Tunisian lawmaker has been sentenced to eight months in prison for sharing a post criticizing President Kais Saied on social media, a court has said.

The lawmaker, Ahmed Saidani, was arrested in late January over a post he shared on social media.

The lawmaker called the president, who visited flood-hit areas, “the commander-in-chief of the flood and the storm.”

The president, who visited flood-hit areas in the capital Tunis, was “used to taking pictures with the poor and needy in his spare time,” the lawmaker said in a post he shared.

The country’s judiciary said he was arrested on suspicion of insulting people on social media.

Saidani, who was charged with violating the country’s telecommunications law, was charged with “harming others through social media,” his lawyer told AFP.

The law punishes the lawmaker with up to two years in prison.
