Donald Trump said he did not want a "fruitless meeting" after his scheduled meeting with his Russian counterpart on the war in Ukraine was postponed.

The US president said at the White House on Tuesday that the two countries' ceasefire talks are stalled because Russia is refusing to stop fighting on the front lines.

Earlier, a White House official said there were "no plans" for Trump and Putin to meet in the near future.

The two leaders were scheduled to meet in Budapest in two weeks, it was announced last Thursday.

The differences between the US and Russian peace proposals this week seem to have become clearer.

This meeting between the two leaders failed to produce any tangible results in terms of finding an end to the war in Ukraine.

One reason the White House chose to postpone the meeting indefinitely seems to be to avoid a similar unsuccessful meeting.

In a statement issued on Tuesday alongside Zelensky, European leaders said any talks to end the war in Ukraine must end the fighting on the front lines.
