On Monday, President Donald Trump issued a threat to obstruct the inauguration of a new bridge constructed by Canada across the Detroit River.

He insisted that Canada must relinquish at least fifty percent ownership of the bridge and comply with other unspecified conditions as part of his latest remarks regarding cross-border trade matters.

Trump stated in an extensive social media post, "We will commence negotiations IMMEDIATELY. Given all that we have provided them, we should possess, at the very least, half of this asset."

He expressed dissatisfaction that the United States would receive no benefits from the bridge and criticized Canada for not utilizing U.S. steel in its construction.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, named in honor of a Canadian hockey legend who played for the Detroit Red Wings for 25 seasons, was anticipated to be completed in early 2026, as indicated on the project's official website.

The initiative was brokered by former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, a Republican, and financed by the Canadian government to alleviate congestion at the existing Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor tunnel. Construction has been ongoing since 2018.
