On Tuesday, President Donald Trump expressed his disapproval of Somali immigrants in the United States, claiming that individuals from the war-torn eastern African nation are overly dependent on the U.S. social safety net and contribute minimally to the country.

This disparaging characterization of the entire immigrant population marks yet another instance of Trump specifically targeting the Somali community within the United States.

Since the 1990s, Somalis have been arriving in Minnesota and various other states, frequently as refugees.

The president failed to differentiate between citizens and non-citizens.

His remarks followed the announcement from his administration that it would be suspending all asylum decisions in the wake of the shooting of two National Guard soldiers in Washington.

Although the individual involved in last week’s incident is from Afghanistan, Trump has seized this opportunity to question immigrants from other countries, including Somalia.

"They offer no value. I do not wish for them to be in our nation," Trump stated to reporters towards the conclusion of an extensive Cabinet meeting.

He further remarked: "There is a reason why their country is undesirable. Your country is terrible, and we do not want them in our nation."
