US President Donald Trump has said he believes South Africa should leave the Group of 20.

Trump's comments come as South Africa prepares to host the G20 summit.

South African government spokesman Vincent Magwanya told the BBC that his country would successfully host the Group of 20 (G20) summit.

The world's largest economies will meet in Johannesburg later this month.

Trump, who has repeatedly accused South Africa of discriminating against whites, said he would not attend the summit and would send Vice President J.D. Vance in his place.

The United States is hosting the summit after South Africa.

"South Africa should not be a member of the group. There is something terrible happening in that country. I will not be there representing my country," Trump said.

The South African government has not publicly responded to Trump's comments.

Last week, South Africa protested the US decision to prioritize asylum applications from white Africans.

The US accusation that white South Africans committed "genocide" has been widely rejected and lacks credible evidence, the government said.
