US President Donald Trump will host Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, for a state visit to Washington on September 24, in the first White House visit by the Chinese leader in more than a decade.

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will welcome Xi and Peng at the White House on Thursday, following an arrival ceremony involving 479 military personnel representing all branches of the US armed forces.

Trump will first receive Xi and Peng at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, September 23, ahead of the formal state arrival ceremony the following morning.

The ceremony on the White House South Lawn, State Floor and Rose Garden will include military honours, performances by US military bands and a display of US and Chinese flags. The US Army Herald Trumpets will perform a fanfare as Trump and Melania welcome the Chinese delegation.

The US Marine Band will play the national anthems of China and the US on the State Floor, followed by remarks from Trump and Xi.

Military displays will include a presidential salute, a military review and performances by the US Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, the US Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon and the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps.

The ceremony will conclude with a military flyover involving a B-2 Spirit bomber and four F-22 Raptor fighter jets.

After the ceremony, Melania Trump and Peng will visit the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, where they will view works spanning centuries of artistic achievement and Sino-American cultural exchange.

Trump and Melania will host Xi and Peng for a state dinner in the White House East Room on Thursday evening. Further details of the dinner are expected to be released by the Office of the First Lady on Wednesday.

The visit will conclude on Friday, when the two couples will have tea in the White House Red Room before travelling to the National Archives in Washington. They will view historical records and documents relating to relations between the US and China before Trump and Melania bid farewell to Xi and Peng.
