President Donald Trump has said that he and his budget director will work out which Democratic institutions to cut, citing the nearly three-day shutdown of the US government.

Republicans have also proposed taking advantage of the opportunity, asking them to set aside Democrats' demands that the government-funded law include health care insurance subsidies.

Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill continue to blame each other for the government shutdown.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers have been forced to stay home as a result. Others have been forced to work without pay.

Analysts do not expect both sides to agree without pressure from the Americans.

It was unclear exactly what Trump might decide during his meeting with Russell Voight, director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB), on Thursday.

When Congress fails to keep the government open, the OMB director works with the president to decide which government jobs should be shut down and which ones should be kept open.
