President Donald Trump on Monday filed a 10 billion US dollars lawsuit against the BBC, alleging defamation and deceptive trade practices over its coverage of his January 6, 2021, speech.

The 33-page complaint accuses the BBC of producing a “false, defamatory, deceptive, disparaging, inflammatory, and malicious portrayal” of Trump, framing it as an “attempt to interfere with and influence” the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

Trump’s legal team claims the broadcaster “spliced together two completely distinct segments” of his Capitol address to misrepresent his intentions. The lawsuit follows a public apology by the BBC last month over the editing of the speech, though the broadcaster has denied the allegations of defamation.

BBC chairman Samir Shah described the incident as an “error in judgment,” prompting the resignations of the corporation’s highest executive and its news director. The BBC has not yet responded to a request for comment from The Associated Press.

Trump delivered the January 6 address shortly before a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol as Congress prepared to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, a result Trump falsely claimed was fraudulent.
