Trump Signs Laws Extending Religious Freedom Oversight and ALS Research Programme

US President Donald Trump has signed two bills into law, extending the mandate of the country's international religious freedom watchdog and renewing a federal programme designed to accelerate access to treatments for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The White House announced the signing on November 3, 2026, covering legislation passed by Congress during the current legislative session.

The first measure, the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom Reauthorization Act of 2026, extends the commission's mandate and authorises annual appropriations through December 2028.

The independent federal commission monitors religious freedom conditions worldwide, evaluates US foreign policy in relation to religious liberty and makes recommendations to the administration and Congress.

The second measure, the Accelerating Access to Critical Therapies for ALS Reauthorization Act of 2026, extends the existing programme through fiscal year 2031.

The legislation continues federal efforts to accelerate the development and availability of treatments for ALS, a progressive neurological disease that affects nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles.

The programme, originally established under the ACT for ALS Act of 2021, supports research and initiatives aimed at improving access to investigational therapies.

The two measures address separate areas of US policy, maintaining institutional oversight of international religious freedom while extending support for research and treatment development for a serious neurological disease.

The White House did not disclose additional funding details in its announcement.
