Trump Signals Possible Reduction of US Troop Presence In Germany

President Donald Trump announced that the United States is reviewing a possible reduction of its military presence in Germany, the largest American deployment in Europe. As of late 2025, over 36,000 active service members were stationed in the country, including at Ramstein Air Base.

The announcement follows a public exchange with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who criticized US dealings with Iran. Trump dismissed Merz's remarks on Truth Social, stating the Chancellor "doesn't know what he's talking about".

Germany currently hosts five of the seven US Army garrisons in Europe. The review period is expected to conclude in the "short period of time," potentially shifting the balance of transatlantic military cooperation.
