Trump Says Gaza Deal Includes Hamas Disarmament Roadmap

US President Donald Trump said Hamas has agreed to a plan for surrendering its weapons as part of a wider framework aimed at establishing a new governing structure in Gaza following months of conflict. The announcement marks a new phase in the implementation of a 20-point peace initiative that helped produce a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and led to the exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.

Trump said the process would take place in stages, with Israeli forces expected to withdraw as disarmament is completed. An International Stabilization Force, working alongside a newly created Palestinian police force, would then assume responsibility for security in Gaza under the plan. The Board of Peace, the multinational body established under the peace initiative, said Hamas had accepted a detailed roadmap covering the next stages of the ceasefire. The organisation described the agreement as a significant development after months of negotiations.

"For the first time, Hamas officially has committed to an actionable plan for relinquishing all its weapons," the Board of Peace said, adding that the move would be followed by an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Trump said the agreement would allow Gaza to eventually be governed by a new Palestinian administration that would work with the Board of Peace to support residents of the territory. He also thanked Egypt, Qatar and Turkey for their role in mediating the agreement.

The peace plan was introduced last year and became the basis for the ceasefire arrangement between Israel and Hamas. The conflict began after Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people, according to Israeli authorities. The subsequent war has resulted in more than 70,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, and created a major humanitarian crisis in the territory.
