President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to countries aligning themselves with the BRICS bloc, threatening an additional 10% tariff on top of existing duties. The statement, posted Sunday on his Truth Social account, came as leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa wrapped up their 17th BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro.

“Any country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy,” Trump wrote.

The warning comes amid a renewed push by BRICS leaders to reshape global financial institutions and reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar. According to the BBC, finance ministers at the summit issued a joint statement describing tariffs as a threat to the global economy, saying they bring “uncertainty into international economic and trade activities.”

Trump’s latest tariff announcement follows earlier statements in 2024, when he proposed 100% tariffs on BRICS countries if they pursued plans to introduce a common currency intended to rival the U.S. dollar.

Trump also said formal tariff notifications will be delivered starting noon Monday, Washington time. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that certain countries may be granted temporary extensions to finalize trade arrangements.

The BRICS summit, held this weekend in Brazil, was marked by unified calls for reform of global financial systems, including changes to IMF voting rights and how major currencies are valued. Leaders also condemned recent U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iran, calling the June attacks a violation of international law. Image
