US President Donald Trump has said he is considering allowing Hungarian President Viktor Orban to buy Russian oil.

Despite sanctions on Russian oil, Trump said he may allow the country to buy Russian oil because "Orban will have a hard time getting oil from other sources."

Orban met with Trump at the White House. The Hungarian Foreign Minister said in a statement that the US had lifted "sanctions" to allow his country to "full and unrestricted oil purchases."

The US announced new sanctions on two Russian oil companies’ weeks ago.

The sanctions on the two largest oil producers, Rosneft and Lukoil, were imposed to pressure Russia to reach an agreement to end the war in Ukraine.

The United States has threatened to impose sanctions on countries that buy Russian oil.

Trump noted that Hungary has difficulty exporting or receiving oil because it is landlocked and faces other logistical obstacles.

He said it was "very disturbing" that some European countries continued to buy Russian oil despite sanctions.
