The Trump administration has decided to cap the number of immigrants allowed into the United States at 7,500 next year, but has said it will prioritize white South Africans over the majority of them.

The announcement on Thursday is a significant reduction from the 125,000 limit set by former President Joe Biden and is the lowest on record.

He gave no reason for the reduction, but said it was "for humanitarian reasons or in the national interest."

In January, Trump signed an executive order to suspend the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, or U.S. Refugee Program. He said it would allow U.S. officials to prioritize national security and public safety.

The previous minimum refugee admission limit was set in 2020 by the Trump administration, with 15,000 set aside for fiscal year 2021.

The announcement, posted on the Federal Register website, said that 7,500 of the quotas would be allocated “primarily” to Afrikaner South Africans and “persons who have been subjected to unlawful or unjust discrimination in their country of origin.”
