President Donald Trump has unveiled plans for a new, large-scale Navy warship, which he has termed a “battleship,” as part of a broader vision for a so-called “Golden Fleet.”

At his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump described the vessel as “the fastest, the largest, and significantly more powerful by a factor of 100 than any battleship ever constructed.”

The ship, provisionally named USS Defiant, is expected to exceed the size of World War II-era Iowa-class battleships. According to Trump, it will carry hypersonic missiles, nuclear cruise missiles, railguns, and high-powered lasers—all technologies currently in various stages of Navy development.

The announcement follows the Navy’s decision last month to cancel plans for a smaller warship, citing budget overruns and construction delays. Instead, the service has pursued a modified version of a Coast Guard cutter already in production.

The Navy has also struggled to complete other advanced vessels, including the Ford-class aircraft carrier and Columbia-class submarine, within projected timelines and budgets. A previous effort to deploy a ship-based railgun, which cost hundreds of millions and spanned more than 15 years, was discontinued in 2021.

Trump’s proposal signals a renewed focus on large-scale naval projects, though the ambitious technology plans face scrutiny from military analysts regarding feasibility, cost, and delivery timelines.
