President Donald Trump will meet on Thursday at the White House with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, whose party is widely regarded as the victor of the 2024 elections dismissed by then-President Nicolás Maduro.

The meeting comes less than two weeks after Maduro and his wife were captured by U.S. forces at a heavily fortified Caracas location and transported to New York to face drug trafficking charges.

Despite previously questioning Machado’s credibility to lead Venezuela and expressing skepticism about his own dedication to supporting democratic governance in the country, Trump described her to Reuters as “a very nice woman” and said: “I’ve seen her on television. I believe we’re simply going to discuss the fundamentals.”

The White House discussions occur as Trump and his senior advisors signal readiness to work with acting President Delcy Rodríguez, who served as Maduro’s vice president and, along with others from the ousted leader’s inner circle, continues to oversee the daily functions of the Venezuelan government.
