Trump Establishes Military Spouse Commission to Address Family Support Challenges

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order establishing a Military Spouse Commission aimed at improving support for military families and strengthening military readiness. The commission will advise the president on policies affecting military spouses and families, with a focus on challenges related to housing, employment, healthcare, education, childcare and support during deployments.

The body will be chaired by the spouse of the Secretary of War, while the president will appoint an executive director. Members will include the spouse of the Secretary of Homeland Security and 20 other military spouses representing the spouses of service secretaries, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and senior enlisted leaders across the military branches.

The executive order directs the commission to engage with military spouses, identify barriers affecting families and develop policy recommendations to improve their quality of life. The commission will submit annual recommendations to the president on measures intended to support military families while maintaining the readiness and effectiveness of the armed forces.

The White House said frequent relocations, extended deployments and the demands of military service create challenges for spouses, including difficulties accessing employment opportunities, healthcare services, education and childcare. The administration said addressing these issues could improve family stability and contribute to military retention. The order builds on previous efforts by the Trump administration to support military families, including measures aimed at improving employment opportunities for military spouses, expanding remote work access and increasing flexibility around professional licensing requirements.

The White House also cited the 2018 Veterans and Transition Act, which allowed military spouses to maintain the same state of residency as their service member, as part of efforts to reduce administrative challenges linked to frequent relocations. The administration said additional executive actions in 2025 expanded education options for military families and addressed the reinstatement of service members discharged under the former COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The establishment of the commission adds a new policy mechanism focused on military family support as the administration seeks to link family welfare with broader defence readiness objectives.
