A proposed $1.8 billion compensation programme linked to alleged federal government “weaponisation” has been placed on hold after strong opposition from Republican lawmakers in Congress.

The decision to pause the fund followed escalating resistance in the Senate, where Republican leaders signalled that the plan had become a political obstacle as negotiations continued over a broader $72 billion spending package.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he had made clear to the White House that the fund needed to be dropped, marking an unusual public break between congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump’s administration.

The suspension also comes as the White House seeks to advance its wider funding priorities, with officials viewing the removal of the compensation scheme as necessary to secure passage of the broader security-related budget legislation.

At the centre of the dispute is a settlement agreement between Trump and the Justice Department intended to resolve a $10 billion lawsuit filed against the Internal Revenue Service over alleged mishandling of tax records.

The proposal quickly drew political and legal scrutiny. Critics described it as a potential “slush fund”, raising concerns that individuals involved in the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol could become eligible for taxpayer-funded payouts.
