US President Donald Trump announced an immediate termination of all trade negotiations with Canada, citing what he described as “egregious behavior” by the North American neighbor, BBC reported.

The decision follows a Canadian advertisement featuring former President Ronald Reagan speaking critically about tariffs. The Ronald Reagan Foundation said the ad, produced by the government of Ontario, used “selectively audio and video” from Reagan’s April 1987 radio address and “misrepresents” his comments. The foundation added it is “reviewing its legal options in this matter.”

Trump wrote on Truth Social that the ad was designed to “interfere with the decision of the US Supreme Court,” which is set to rule on his global tariffs. “Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED,” he stated late on Thursday.

The announcement comes just over two weeks after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited the White House to request a relaxation of US tariffs. Trump had described Carney as a “world-class leader” and said the Canadian would be “very happy” with their discussion.

Although roughly 85 percent of cross-border trade between the US and Canada remains tariff-free under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), Trump has imposed sector-specific global tariffs, including 50 percent on metals and 25 percent on automobiles, which have hit Canada hard, leading to job losses and increased pressure on businesses.
