US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he is unconcerned about Chinese military exercises near Taiwan, noting his personal rapport with President Xi Jinping.

"I have a good relationship with President Xi. He hasn't said anything to me about the exercises. But I don't see them," Trump told reporters. "No. That doesn’t bother me at all. They’ve been practicing naval exercises in the area for the past 20 years."

The remarks come two weeks after the United States announced a major arms sale to Taiwan, a move that reportedly angered Beijing, which regards the island as a breakaway province.

China’s two-day military exercise involves patrols around key areas of Taiwan. The Chinese defence ministry described the drills as a warning to "Taiwan independence separatists" and "foreign invaders." The operations, extending across five directions surrounding the island, are expected to last ten hours.

Taiwan’s presidential office condemned the exercises, citing violations of international law. In a social media statement on Tuesday, President Lai Wing-tae said the actions of the Chinese Communist Party do not reflect the conduct of a "responsible power."

While the United States maintains formal diplomatic ties with China, it remains Taiwan’s closest ally and primary arms supplier.
