President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of 300 National Guard troops to control what he described as an out-of-control crime situation in Chicago.

The move comes hours after immigration officials said they were involved in a protest in the Democratic-led city, where their vehicle was deliberately rammed and an armed woman was shot and killed.

For weeks, several states and their leaders have been calling Trump's military deployment plan an abuse of power.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker said Trump is "trying to manufacture a crisis."

The news of the military deployment comes after a federal judge in Portland, Oregon, another conservative state, rejected the Trump administration's plan to deploy 200 troops to the state.

They added that the move would only exacerbate tensions in the city and lead to more protests.

It is not yet clear whether National Guard troops will arrive in Chicago, but it is likely that the move will be challenged in court.

Earlier this week, Trump spoke to military officers about the deployment of troops to American cities.

He told the military leaders he wanted American cities to be "training grounds" for soldiers to fight "internal enemies" and quell unrest.
