U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticised Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday, Reuters reported, following Carney’s address the previous day warning of a “rupture” in the international rules-based order.

Trump’s remarks came amid a broader discussion of policy issues, including his interest in Greenland, plans for Venezuela, and the potential next chairman of the Federal Reserve. He told Carney, “They should be grateful to us, Canada. Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”

Carney had delivered a standing-ovation address on Tuesday, emphasising that economic integration was increasingly used as a weapon and tariffs as leverage by “great powers.” Without naming the United States, he said, “We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition. We know the old order is not coming back. We shouldn’t mourn it. Nostalgia is not a strategy.”

The exchange comes after Trump previously threatened to annex Canada and shared an AI-generated map depicting Canada and Greenland as part of the United States, underscoring his longstanding focus on Greenland.
