President Donald Trump met with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Friday, highlighting unexpected areas of agreement despite their differing political perspectives.

The half-hour Oval Office meeting, followed by 30 minutes of questions from reporters, focused on housing affordability, crime, and the cost of living in New York. Trump described Mamdani as “a very rational person” and praised his efforts to improve the city. “I met with a man who really wants to see New York be great again,” Trump said.

Mamdani, a democratic socialist, said the meeting was part of his effort to “leave no stone unturned” in tackling affordability challenges. “We should be relentless and pursue all avenues and all meetings that can make our city affordable for every single New Yorker,” he said.

Trump indicated support for him, adding he would feel “very, very comfortable being in New York” under Mamdani’s leadership. He also noted that he expects to assist, rather than obstruct, initiatives that could benefit the city.

Both officials described the discussion as productive, covering topics from rent and utilities to grocery costs and broader measures to prevent residents from being priced out. Mamdani said he “appreciated the time with the president” and looked forward to collaborating on affordability initiatives.
