Ethiopia and Eritrea are moving troops and military equipment near the northern Tigray region, raising the risk of renewed conflict in the Horn of Africa, Bloomberg reported, citing diplomats in the region.

The military buildup comes amid weeks of heightened tensions between the federal government and Tigray officials, three years after the signing of the Pretoria peace agreement, as well as the impact of the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that Ethiopian troops and equipment were moving north along the coast, while Eritrean forces were also moving into areas in the Tigray region. Unverified video footage circulating on social media showed soldiers and vehicles carrying heavy equipment moving.

Commenting on the report, analysts warned that the situation could escalate. Kettle Tronvol, a peace and conflict studies scholar at the New University College in Oslo, said that if the right conditions were met, a “new war” could erupt.
