Toyota plans to introduce three fully electric vehicles in South Africa in early 2026, entering a growing EV market where Chinese brands like BYD are competing with European carmakers, Reuters reported.

Toyota sells only hybrids in South Africa but holds a 67% share of the hybrid and plug-in hybrid market in 2024, led by models such as the Corolla Cross.

Toyota South Africa CEO Andrew Kirby told Reuters, "We’re launching battery electric vehicles at the beginning of 2026, so we will have three new battery electric vehicles," without providing further details. He added that the future will include multiple powertrains: internal combustion, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric, fuel cell electric vehicles, and potentially carbon-neutral engines.

Challenges such as low incomes, high import duties, unreliable power, and limited charging infrastructure continue to slow EV adoption. On Chinese competition, Kirby said, "It’s a very strategic concern for us and we need to respond in the right way and as quickly as possible."

Kirby described South Africa’s auto sector as "at an inflection point," citing flat production, declining local content, and rising imports. The seven major local manufacturers, including Toyota, BMW, Isuzu, and Volkswagen, have submitted policy proposals to the trade minister to support the industry, suggesting tax and rebate system adjustments.

Toyota’s fully electric models will initially be imported, with plans to eventually produce some locally.
