TikTok is set to launch a new version of its app tailored exclusively for U.S. users, marking a forward step toward addressing national security concerns and regulatory demands in the United States.
To address concerns about data security and algorithmic transparency, TikTok is reportedly creating a separate U.S.-specific app, internally referred to as "M2." The app will isolate user data on U.S. infrastructure, use a distinct recommendation algorithm, and function independently from the global TikTok platform, mirroring Douyin's operation in China. Its launch is anticipated by early September 2025.
This development follows U.S. legislation requiring ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to divest its American operations by January 2025. TikTok is also preparing for an anticipated sale of its U.S. business to American investors. President Donald Trump recently indicated that a deal is near completion, with formal talks with China expected soon.
The new app's algorithm will be trained exclusively on data from U.S. users, similar to Douyin (the mainland China-only version of TikTok), restricting content sharing between the international and American versions. The existing TikTok app will remain available in U.S. app stores until March 2026, although this timeline is subject to change based on regulatory outcomes.
