Tigray University Students to Transfer to Other Public Universities

Students who were enrolled at universities in Ethiopia’s Tigray region will be temporarily transferred to other public universities, the Ministry of Education said, allowing them to continue their studies outside the region amid prevailing conditions.

Education Minister Birhanu Nega announced the decision after meeting students who had gone to the ministry seeking a solution to disruptions that have prevented them from continuing their university education in Tigray.

Under the arrangement, affected students will be placed at other public universities where their safety can be ensured. The transfers will remain temporary until conditions in Tigray are considered suitable for students to resume their studies there, according to the ministry.

Students will not need to appear in person at the ministry to apply. An online registration system is scheduled to be made available from the evening of September 14, through which students can submit their transfer applications remotely.

Applicants will need to provide the name of their previous university, their year of study and field of study when completing the transfer form. The ministry has urged students to complete the registration process promptly.

The arrangement follows complaints from students who had been studying at universities in Tigray but are currently unable to continue their education because of the situation in the region.

Birhanu said students who left Tigray to avoid war and conflict have the right to live and study in safety. He said measures should be taken to ensure their education continues without interruption.

The minister said young people should concentrate on their education and become a generation capable of assuming responsibility for the country in the future.

A number of students who appeared at the Ministry of Education on September 14 raised questions about their circumstances and the transfer process. Birhanu, State Minister Kindeya Gebrehiwot and other senior ministry officials responded to their questions and provided further explanations.
