
The Supreme Court of Tigray Region has ruled that Muslim female students in Aksum city, who were banned from attending school, must "learn while wearing the hijab," the court said.
The Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs of Ethiopia has called for the "enforcement" of the court's decision to allow female Muslim students in Aksum to "return to school in their Islamic attire."
Female Muslim students from Aksum, who have missed national and regional exams due to suspension of their studies since November, have demanded "compensation for the education they missed."
The Civil Division of the Tigray Regional Supreme Court issued this decision during a hearing held Thursday, August 21, 2025, the court's Communications Director, Alemayehu Eshete, told the BBC.
