Report Says 11 Dead, 425 Infected in Tigray Cholera Outbreak

A cholera outbreak has been reported in various areas of the Tigray region, and 11 people have died.

Ato Mebrahtom Hafte, the coordinator of the Public Health Emergency Department of the Tigray Regional Health Bureau, told the BBC that a cholera outbreak has been observed in the region since July 12, 2025.

He said the outbreak began in the districts of Selwa and Samre, which border the Waghemra zone of the Amhara region.

He added that the outbreak occurred in the Seyeti Adi Abo area of the North-West Zone within 22 days of the outbreak in Samre Woreda in the South-East Zone of the Tigray Region and Selawa Woreda in the South Zone.

"According to the current information, about 425 people have been infected. 11 people have died," he said.

Ato Mebrahtom said that people who had gone to Waghemra from the Tigray region for agricultural work had been infected with the disease.
