The interim administration of the region has announced that it will not be able to pay 17 months of unpaid salaries to government employees in one go due to the war in the Tigray region.
The administration made this announcement in response to a reporter's question regarding the suspension of the regional Supreme Court's decision and order to pay the 17 months of unpaid salaries of teachers in the region.
The Tigray regional state's budget deficit is high, making it impossible to pay 17 months of unpaid salaries to government employees at once, the interim administration's vice president, Ato Amanuel Assefa, told reporters.
The Vice President, who recalled that due to the war, the salaries of all government employees, including teachers, for 2021 and some months of 2022, have not been paid due to the lack of a budget from the federal government, stated that the interim administration is currently unable to pay them all at once due to the closure of revenue sources.
The Vice President, who recalled that due to the war, the salaries of all government employees, including teachers, for 2024 and some months of 2025, have not been paid due to the lack of a budget from the federal government, stated that the interim administration is currently unable to pay them all at once due to the closure of revenue sources.
"Even if the interim administration were to pay, the current funds would not be enough," said the interim administration's vice president, explaining that it would completely halt the reconstruction, health, and education projects being carried out in the region.
